Con Update! APT update!

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 21, 2010, 2:50 PM
Hey Friends!  I just got word that I'll be boothing in the artist alley at Anime-Zing! June 17-19 at Davenport Iowa!

Also I regret to inform you that I'll only be attending Evercon, January 8th only.  I would love to make it both days but it might be tough to arrange. Its coming up fast and I can't wait to go!

In other worlds, I may have found an apartment that I might be moving into January 1st.  IT IS AWESOME, and paperwork is in the works!  Its in this old school that was transformed into apartments.  I'm not sure what classroom my apartment was, I'll try and find out.

The coolest thing about it is....

it still has the big honkin chalkboard!!! <3

Hopefully I wont be "that guy" anymore...

you know...

that guy...
who lives in the basement...
of his parent's house...

...reading comic books.

man, that apartment sounds damn cool. Is it like a loft or did they add walls to make rooms? I'm in the process of scouting out apartments myself (even though I don't have a new job yet, but wishful hunting, I guess)

What is this deal in Davenport? That's only a few hours from me, if I'm not doing anything, I might have to check it out. Course, hopefully, by then I'll be living in Des Moines with a new job and then you'd be like four hours away.

It is a cool place, no loft in this one. But I just got a call from the leasing agent that there are salary restrictions and may not be eligible to stay there :( *shakes fist* I wish they would have mentioned that earlier haha. We are trying to figure out if it is something we can work around, so I dunno if I'm getting it or not.

They do have other apts in the same complex that aren't restricted but they are like twice the rent which isn't cool...

OOOooooo do you have leads for a new gig in Des Moines?! I hope it goes well! And if you are free we should totally meet up! I'm not sure what to expect at this event, its an Anime convention but I've never heard of it before. Here is their website if you are interested:

Otherwise I might be going to another con in Coralville which is a little closer to Des Moines in July. I'm still waiting to hear if I got a booth.

I hate income restrictions, it's the most annoying thing ever. I understand why it exists, but dammit. Many a cool apartment have I found during hunts in Des Moines (which I do even though I don't have a job there yet, it calms me down when my neighbors do something to annoy) and all the nice ones I can afford have that damn income restriction. And I really hope I'll end up making more than their restriction, lol. So I understand your pain.

As of right now, no definite leads. I have an application out right now for a designer position at a cuisine magazine (ha, I rhymed) that I desperately want. The company sounds great, their designs are clean and modern, and damn, but I love food. I'd get to look at beautiful pictures of food all day! But they already had like 300 applications in when I called beginning of December and they told me they weren't even going to start going through them until after the holidays. So we'll see. They put they wanted 1-3 years experience, which is a little less than I have, and I'm afraid they're going to end up going with somebody more entry level, somebody they can train and pay less. I really want it, so I'm making myself more nervous about it than I should, of course, lol.

Other than that, nothing really on the radar. There hasn't been much to apply for lately, at least, nothing worthwhile. But I'm hoping after the first of the year things will pick up - new fiscal years, new budgets, new jobs. Fingers crossed that something comes up, because I dislike my current job/town.

We'll have to see what my life is looking like when summer comes around, but I might be able to hit up a convention somewhere. As I've said before, I've never been to a convention, so I don't know what to expect at all. I love anime but don't really know anything about it, and certainly wouldn't be one who dresses up, lol. I've always said I'd go to a Star Trek convention in a heartbeat if I could meet William Shatner, lol, but other cons have never really entered my brain space. Like I said, we'll see what's going on as it gets closer.

Oh, and happy holidays. Hope you had some good times!

Boo to restrictions indeed. I had a long chat with the leasing agent today but now my head is spinning trying to sort it all out. I'm thinking of dropping it, it seems more trouble than its worth especially if for some reason you exceed their restrictions they can terminate your lease at any moment... ridiculous.

But anywho, FINGERS CROSSED FOR YOU and the possible lead! I hope you get interviewed and get a good shoe in the door. I wouldn't be too scared of 300 applicants, we had 100 apply once but 98 of them had poor resumes or poor web portfolios and I've seen your work before so I'm rooting for you, you have very strong web presence and your portfolio is well organized and clean. Best of luck and I hope it goes well!

Back in August I was boothing at a Chicago convention and both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were there and the crowd was insane!! I tried getting through to get to the entrance to meet some friends and people were packed in so tight there was no room to push through! They also had the final five cylons there too which was pretty awesome.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and have a glorious New Years! :highfive:

Yeah, that's what I'd heard from digging around trying to find out more about the stupid income restrictions, termination at any time. Wonderful. I really hope I can get a decent apartment when I do move, please be better than the current one. Well, the current one's not too bad, it's more the Jerry Springer show I get in my front yard with my awesome neighbors - on all sides. Love it. :X

I just finished writing another letter to renew my interest in the job, saying something about when I applied and how they told me they told me they were going to begin reviewing applications after the new year. Not sure if it's the most amazing thing I've ever written, but it's definitely not bad, and it'll give me a reason to send them my physical resume instead of just my digital one, which is nice but not near as impressive as holding my tri-fold resume in your hands. Hoping it'll make me stand out a little. Thanks for the crossed fingers.

Way cool you were there when Shat and Nimoy were there. lol, I always say I'd love to meet them, but god, I don't know if I could handle the crazy Trek crowds. Well, Trek/Galactica. I never did get to see the final season or so, so I don't know who the final five even are. It's on my long list of neglected tv shows that need to be caught up on.

And yes, Christmas was great, New Years was as uneventful as it always is for me (which suits me just fine) and now I'm unfortunately back at work. Yay! Hope your holidays were fun too.

OMG I know, I know. It's insane, I'm like two or three years behind on ALL my shows. At least. I don't know what to say, I'm not even that busy. I just get away from them and by the time I realize that I've forgotten to watch in a while, I realize I've missed the whole season. Might as well wait until I can watch them all on netflix or dvd or something, marathon style. Then I forget. And it all just snowballs from there.

I periodically go back and start watching my old shows from the start so I remember what had happened previously, so I'm ready to catch up with the new stuff. But then shit happens and I never finish these marathons I pull. I started watching old BSG shows a while back and just never got around to finishing them. I do plan on finishing, I know it'll be great. I just had a fresh urge to watch them again after listening to an interview with Katee Sackhoff on this little Portland radio show I love. Reminded me that I loved that show, loved her character, need to finish the show ... and then I get home and end up watching CSI instead. Because I've already seen them and they're nice in the background while I'm doing other things - dishes, cleaning, going through old magazines, drawings, etc.

As I said, it all gets away from me and snowballs. This was all easier in college when I had friends who watched shit with me and therefore held me accountable, lol.

Oh yeah, I totally understand! I'm such a loser when it comes to TV, I fortunately had an old college roommate obsessed with the show, and he would force seasons of DVDs on me. It doesn't help that I didn't have a TV in Illinois for 2 and half years haha.

Haha, I like to wait for the DVDs too and try and marathon. Thats the way to do it! *highfive*

I need to visit my old roommate again soon, maybe he'll have the Caprica series I can borrow :D
