Big thanks to all who stopped by at Anime-Zing!
You guys made this con a lot of fun despite the poor turnout. I got to meet up with some artist/dealer friends, as well as many friends I met at Spark. You kids are all super cool.
Unfortunately, Anime Zing really hurt everyone I talked to in the dealers room and artist alley. Many were told falsified numbers and that is very unprofessional. The floor staff & con suite, however, was amazing and helpful.
I could rant more about this con, but I hate being so negative. To put it short, I won't be supporting any cons under the same conchair/circuit. At least not until some major changes get made and positive feedback is claimed.
Aside from that, I am looking forward to seeing so many of the same artists and dealers, and Iowa friends at Anime Iowa coming up at the end of July. I miss you all already.
In other worlds, I received a proof for a compilation book I'm working on and man am I excited. I will try and get an order for Anime Iowa, but realistically It will be debuted at Wizard World Chicago.
I got a few tweaks before I print a solid run but I will keep you posted

I haven't chatted with you in far too long, my friend, but life is still busy here despite the non-work I'm doing. Still laid off, I'm afraid, nothing too promising on the horizon. I do have one position they're in a hurry to fill in West Des Moines - a beautiful place, but an insanely boring job that I just don't think I want to take. Is it too much to ask to have a job that I don't despise? Many say it is, but a scant few say it's not that bad to hold out, especially if you have a place to live for free like I do (hooray 'rents for letting me freeload ... they're also ones who aren't in a hurry for me to move back out, they don't want me to be unhappy either. Course, ask them again in another few months if they still want me to be mooching off them, lol.)
*sigh* oh well. life. whattya gonna do, lol. I have been keeping busy though - I've started doing the local farmer's market here in town again (baked goods, of course, our specialty, but also my jewelry I make and a few other odds and ends) and it is such a time sucker. Fun, but frantic as each Saturday approaches, lol. I hope you're doing well other than this con story; hopefully Coralville will be better. If only I was still living back down where I was before, Coralville is so much closer then than now. Oh well, I was never a big con person anyway, I'm afraid.
Oh no, what boring job is in Des Moines? Just simple grunt work, or just boring material? Moving back with the rents ain't so bad, sounds like they are happy to have you. Thats cool about the Farmer's market too! Who knows maybe you can pick up some freelance work there! Back in my signcrafting days we'd get several farmers wanting a new sign for their farm, or logos to placed on their tractors. We got a lot of business from them. Do you display your photography work there too? I hope it goes well and sounds like a fun way to spend the summer!
Yeah... this con wasn't so great... I mean I had a good time, but my artist and dealer friends were really upset as for some of them its their only source of income. I have fun wherever I go haha, but yeah... rough stuff for them. Good luck with everything and happy hunting, I hope something grand pops open for you soon.
The job was for Iowa Realty ... mostly working with nitpicky realtors and builders making them fliers, postcards, signs, anything else they might need - and often not knowing what they're really wanting. So not only boring material, but annoying to boot. I don't know, we'll see if I get called back for a second interview, then I'd get to meet some of who I'd really be working with. I'm not holding out too much hope for it though. As you said, parents are happy to have me and I'm doing okay here.
I love the market, despite all the drama that's been going down with it this year (which is beyond stupid, if you ask me, but whatever) I do put out a sign and some business cards advertising my design services; so far I've only had one lady snag a card, but I'll keep putting it out. I don't have any photography out either, mostly because if I were going to sell it I'd want to make better prints and I just don't have the time/start-up cash to do that at the moment. I have a hard enough time selling the jewelry - generally the people who come to the market are coming for food, veggies or whatnot. It's even a hard sell with my baked goods (which are amazing, not to toot my own horn or anything, lol) because you always get the folks "oh I shouldn't" But as I said, it keeps me busy and does get my business cards out in front of everybody. And, of course, fun times.
I still had a great time and thanks for helping me out. It was great to see you again. See you at AI!
My feedback form was less than nice in places... Honestly, I think it really had the potential to be a good con but (among other things) they didn't advertise it very well and just kinda phoned it in on some stuff...
....oddly enough though......:
by some miracle: I turned a small ( think really small) profit on this con.... I had to double check my numbers a few times, but
